Protecting Your Teeth While Wearing Braces

Protecting Your Teeth While Wearing Braces
Posted on 01/05/2016

Now that your Plano, TX orthodontist has placed braces on your teeth, it's very important to protect your teeth for the duration of your orthodontic treatment. Here are 4 quick & easy tips to help you protect your teeth while wearing braces:

1. Be Thorough With Your Oral Hygiene Routine

While it's always vital to brush and floss your teeth, it’s even more critical to maintain a diligent oral hygiene regimen when you have braces. Food, bacteria, and plaque have more places to hide around the brackets and wires of your braces. To prevent plaque buildup, you should brush your teeth thoroughly after meals and before bedtime. You should also floss at least once per day, preferably before going to sleep.

2. See Your Family Dentist

It's important to see your family dentist for routine dental checkups and professional cleanings every three to six months to help make sure your teeth and gums are healthy. If you fail to see your dentist while you're wearing braces, and a problem should arise, your treatment will likely be delayed. This is something neither you nor we at Curry Orthodontics want to see happen.

3. Wear A Mouth Guard When Playing Sports

If you’re an athlete who loves playing sports, be sure to wear a protective mouth guard. Although there are special mouth guards available both online and at local sporting goods stores – which are made specifically for people with braces – we at Curry Orthodontics provide mouth guards to our patients who play sports at no charge.

4. Be Mindful of How Much Sugar You Consume

When you had your braces put on your teeth, we told you how important it is to avoid eating crunchy, sticky, and hard foods that can damage or break your braces. While it's OK to enjoy braces-friendly sweets and snacks every now and then, you should refrain from eating these kinds of foods when you can. If you get an appetite for something sweet, choose something on the healthier side, like soft fresh fruits and natural yogurt instead. Nutrient-rich food also gives you more energy and makes you feel good, so it’s a win-win!

By protecting your teeth while wearing braces, your orthodontic treatment plan will proceed smoothly and on-schedule. Before long, your braces will be off, and you’ll be smiling like never before.
