What is a Permanent Retainer?

When many people in and around the Plano, TX area think of retainers, they may remember when retainers were removable pink acrylic appliances that fit in the roof of the mouth with a wire in front of the teeth. People have memories of losing a retainer at lunch when they accidentally threw a napkin in the trash, forgetting that their retainer was in that napkin. These retainers work very well and they can be removed for brushing and flossing. However, if that removable retainer is not worn as directed, it isn’t as effective as a permanent retainer. Although we still use these and other types of removable retainers, now there are other options for maintaining that beautiful new smile!

With a permanent retainer, you won’t have to remember to wear it and you won’t need to worry about losing it. As you age, teeth naturally shift some and a permanent retainer holds those teeth in place for a great long-term result and sparkling smile.

Facts about Permanent Retainers

  • Permanent retainers are made to fit on the back of the upper and lower front teeth.

  • Permanent retainers are shaped to fit your individual teeth and are made out of a stainless steel or metal alloy flexible wire. After the wire is shaped, it is bonded to the teeth.

  • The wire does not show when you smile and no one even knows you are wearing it.

  • Dr. Curry typically places a permanent retainer on the back of the upper four front teeth and the back of the lower six front teeth at the same appointment you have your braces removed. (Note: You will also receive a removable retainer to wear at night in addition to these permanent retainers.)

  • The permanent retainer stays in indefinitely unless your general dentist or hygienist suggests removing it later for the overall health of your gums and/or oral hygiene.
