We make it our aim to provide all our patients with the highest quality of orthodontic care, not just during the procedure, but at all other times as well. This means that we always make sure our patients are aware and informed about their dental and orthodontic health, the treatments they may need, and their procedure. When it comes to braces, we understand that there will sometimes be hesitance about wearing them. We want to take this opportunity to shed some light on a question we get very frequently: ‘Do braces hurt?’

Will the Procedure of Getting Braces Hurt?

Generally, the process of getting braces put on will take about one to two hours. We offer a variety of different types of braces, so the procedure may be different depending on what type you get. However, the common theme remains the same in that there shouldn’t be any pain. Having braces put on may be somewhat uncomfortable, but you shouldn’t feel pain.

Will Braces Hurt While Wearing Them?

While there won’t be any pain during the procedure, your gums and teeth will likely be sore for some time afterward. It will usually be about a week where your mouth will be sore or irritated from the braces. It won’t really ‘hurt’ and it’s nothing to worry about, but it might be an annoyance for a while. After about a month, patients start to get completely used to their braces.

How Can I Relieve any Pain?

If you happen to have any pain or discomfort, there are a few things you can do to alleviate those feelings. These include the following:

  • You should stay away from hard foods when you’ve just started to wear braces. Try to limit yourself to soft foods like applesauce or mashed potatoes.
  • You should also avoid drinking anything acidic like orange juice.
  • You can take over-the-counter pain relief medicine like Tylenol or Ibuprofen to help ease any pain.
  • If needed, we can give you orthodontic wax for you to use. You will want to apply the wax to the brackets that are rubbing against the inside of your mouth.
