Why Is Orthodontics Important?

Orthodontics is important for several reasons. Without orthodontic treatment, some oral problems can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, bone destruction, and even the loss of teeth. Orthodontics also provides cosmetic and psychological benefits. It can give a person a more attractive smile and boost that person’s confidence. When should my child first see an orthodontist?

When Should My Child First See an Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that your child should first have an orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven. This is because it’s generally the age when the first molars will erupt. It will give us a chance to evaluate your child’s front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships while also being able to check for other orthodontic problems. It’s important to note that an early evaluation doesn’t necessarily mean early treatment. Sometimes we’ll simply monitor the situation and wait for the best time to perform treatment. Other times, no treatment will even be needed. Our Plano orthodontist office is proud to offer complimentary consultations.

How Long Will Orthodontic Treatment Take?

This will vary from patient to patient and depends on the severity of the orthodontic problem. Typically, active treatment time with braces or Invisalign will take about one to three years with milder orthodontic cases falling on the shorter end of the timeline. This process is followed by the retention phase, which is used to maintain the new alignment of the teeth. How much does orthodontic treatment cost?

How Much Does Orthodontic Treatment Cost?

The actual treatment cost will depend on the severity of the problem and the treatment approach selected (this can include metal braces, ceramic braces, and Invisalign among other options). However, orthodontics is actually more affordable than you may realize. At our Plano orthodontist office, we’ll discuss the fees before any treatment begins. We offer several different payment option plans, including one with no down payment. We will also file your orthodontic insurance for you.

What Special Training Does an Orthodontist Have?

Orthodontists are specialists in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of dental and facial irregularities. The American Dental Association requires orthodontists to have at least two years of postdoctoral, advanced specialty training in orthodontics after having graduated from dental school. Our own Dr. Curry graduated with honors from the University of Oklahoma and received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas. He also received a Master of Science and a Certificate in Orthodontics from the University of Nebraska.
