In Plano, as well as many other cities in the country, children seem to be wearing braces or having some type of orthodontic treatment at younger ages. Braces and orthodontic treatment that were previously associated primarily with adolescents and adults have become common in younger children as well. How does an orthodontist determine if early orthodontic treatment is necessary or beneficial? How do I know if early orthodontic treatment is right for my child? We’ve outlined some of the advantages of early orthodontic treatment and some of the conditions that we at Curry Orthodontics look at when determining whether or not early treatment is necessary.

What is Early Orthodontic Treatment?

Early orthodontic treatment (sometimes called phase one treatment) usually begins between ages seven and nine while the second phase of treatment might begin around age eleven or twelve with full braces. In early treatment, Dr. Curry can address the growth of the jaw, a bite problem (such as an underbite or a crossbite), or a harmful habit. Early treatment is also used to make room for permanent teeth to come in when the teeth are crowded.

What Are the Benefits of Early Treatment?

Early orthodontic treatment can:

  • Make a positive difference in your child's appearance and self-esteem.
  • Make later orthodontic treatment simpler and/or shorter.
  • Gain or preserve space for permanent teeth to come in.
  • Reduce the likelihood of trauma to protruding upper front teeth.
  • Influence jaw growth in a positive manner.
  • Start addressing early airway issues.

When Should My Child See an Orthodontist in Plano?

Dr. Curry agrees with the recommendation of the American Association of Orthodontists that states that children should have an orthodontic checkup by age 7.  Curry Orthodontics offers a free consultation so that you will know whether or not your child would benefit from early treatment.
