Traditionally, children dress up and go trick or treating on Halloween night. Although this is still very popular, in recent years, many have celebrated Halloween in other ways. We at Curry Orthodontics have some ideas for celebrating in Plano and we hope you have a fun, safe Halloween and that you are careful to eat the treats that won’t play tricks on your braces!

Block Parties

One neighborhood we know of in Plano is having a block party. The City of Plano is allowing them to close off the street to all traffic and is supplying them with a trailer full of items to make the block party work well. The city delivers the trailer with tables, chairs, water coolers, ice chests, trash cans, first aid kit, cones and barricades to close the street, and party games such as horse-shoes, ring toss, and ladder golf. We think that sounds like a lot of fun and the city is doing a lot of the work! Reserving the trailer is FREE for all neighborhoods that are registered with the City of Plano as a homeowners association or crime watch group.

Homemade Treats

The American Association of Orthodontists has some fun orthodontic-friendly Halloween recipes on their website. Here is our favorite!

Scary Skull & Ghastly Ghost Cookies (Makes 12)

  • 12 Nutter Butter cookies
  • 12 oz vanilla or chocolate candy coating
  • 24 chocolate chips or vanilla chips if using chocolate candy coating
  • Black food coloring marker (or white if using chocolate candy coating)
  1. Melt candy coating according to package directions.
  2. Completely dip each cookie into the candy coating, and remove carefully with two forks onto a baking sheet lined with wax paper.
  3. Before the candy coating begins to harden, add chocolate chip eyes for ghosts, and black food coloring marker face for skulls.
  4. Place in freezer for 15 minutes until candy coating has hardened and faces are set. Serve at room temperature and enjoy!

Prestonwood Plano Fall Festival

Prestonwood Plano Campus hosts a Fall Festival each year. This event has a fifteen year history of safe, family-friendly entertainment. Thousands of people attend each year and enjoy the food trucks, face painting, inflatables, game booths, free candy, and the adventure train. There is no admission charge, but tickets are required for food purchases. Dr. Curry will be working in one of the booths as he has several years in the past so come by and say hi!

Best Halloween Candy For Braces

Chewy, sticky candy is probably the number one culprit in causing problems with braces. This candy can get stuck in your braces or can pull and tug at braces causing stress to the teeth. It can also damage your wires and brackets. Hard candy can damage your braces and can also damage a tooth. Some delicious candies that are safe for braces are soft chocolates such as Hershey’s kisses and chocolates with peanut butter like Reece’s pieces. Be sure to brush well to prevent problems with your teeth!
